First glimpse from taxi of the water off Dominican Republic.  Pathetic I left the swimsuit home and brought dress suits instead.  Such is life.

Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world.

Reclaiming A Passion

Two weeks ago I got back on the bicycle in earnest.  Having not ridden consistently in 15 years, and only casually for a week here and there—pain has become my best friend.  It does not help that we live in foothills so regardless of where I ride, climbing is in the mix.

We’ve all heard the real battle in any exercise program is a mental one.  To keep this under control, I decided to STOP thinking about the act of riding—and instead about the pleasure of riding.  I notice scenery, the neighbors’ routines, and wildlife along the way.

I have thought about why I am so happy about riding again, and how I can keep this going as a lifestyle and not just a phase…

Aside from the obvious health benefits, I wanted to re-experience the same high from years ago when I felt power on the bike.  I noticed for the first time the other day that I was pushing bigger gears and shaving minutes off my routes.  Mind you I am not where I want to be yet, but a whole lot better than that pathetic ride two weeks ago.

Defining Perseverance

I’m driving in the car yesterday to an early AM appointment (6:40)—its dark, rainy, foggy and just plain ugly outside.  Ironically, I am coping by running through some mental exercises about how to take my business results to the next level.  Just when I got to the point where I was thinking—“I need to work smarter not harder”—I see him.  A man heading to work to a local factory for the 7AM shift.  It is 33 Degrees F outside, pouring rain and dark and he was riding a bicycle to work.  I am back to a fresh sheet of paper and a better question—“Am I prepared to just work harder?”

My Blog

I have spent the better part of 25 years in leadership.  During that time I learned a great deal about people—and even more about myself.  In the same way I have benefited from others, it is my desire that others benefit from the accumlated wisdom of my wonderful life.  If anything said here reasonates with you, pass it on!
